PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE
March 2015
Dear ALHS Parents and Students:
Greetings! I hope all is well with you as we enter the busiest time of year. Just around the corner, we have testing, Spring Break and Prom. Before we all know it, graduation will be upon us.
Spring Break begins on March 21. School will be closed from March 21 to March 27, and will resume on Monday, March 30. I wish you all a very restful and enjoyable break. Our Prom will be held at the Soka University on April 11.
TESTING
We are currently preparing sophomores to take the California High School Exit Exam which will be held on March 17 and 18. Please ensure that your sophomores come to school that day ready to do their best having had a good night’s sleep and nutritious breakfast.
In April, students will begin a modified version of academic achievement tests. The California Standards Test, the CSTs under the STAR testing system, has been suspended by the State of California as it prepares to embark upon a system that measures student achievement of the new Common Core State Standards. This year sophomores will take the federally mandated Life Science test only. Juniors will take the Smarter Balancd Exams (SBAC) in Math and English which will include the Early Assessment Program (EAP) tests in April. The EAP will help students understand their “readiness for college” status in English and Math. The EAP is a crucial exam for all college bound students.
In May, students in Advanced Placement classes will take the AP exams in any courses in which they are enrolled and have elected to take an exam. These are important exams which may earn the students college credit. We encourage all parents to talk to their students about all the exams they take and to support them by encouraging them to get plenty of rest and eating a good breakfast before an exam, and maintaining a positive attitude about exams.
STUDENT PROGRESS
Third quarter report cards will be mailed home before Spring Break. Please review your child’s progress closely, continue to monitor School Loop, and contact teachers and/or counselors if you have concerns. To further support students in their learning, we continue to offer the Tutoring Center Monday through Thursday in the Library from 3:00 – 4:00 p.m. Teachers are also available after school by appointment to tutor students as needed. Student also have 28 minutes on Mon thru Thursday from 11:03 to 11:31 a.m. to get help during the Academy Program time. ALL students are expected to effectively take advantage of this time.

Registration and New Classes
Finally, we have begun the process to register your students for the 2015-2016 school year. Please contact your child’s counselor or an administrator if you have concerns about registration. Also, we will be offering two new AP classes at ALHS next year: AP Statistics and AP 2D Design. Please call us if you have questions about these classes.
Please help us support your students’ achievement as we proceed into this critical time of year. Help us with your students’ achievement by providing structured study and homework time at home and by ensuring that students get plenty of rest so that they may come to school prepared to learn and perform well. Attendance and punctuality are also imperative to the academic achievement of all of our students.
As always, if there is anything we can do to help do not hesitate to contact us.
Warm regards,

Jim Cronin
