PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE
May 2015
With Spring Break, Prom, and the SBAC tests now behind us, the school year is rapidly coming to an end. We have less than three weeks left of school, so students must work diligently to finish the semester successfully. Final progress reports have been mailed home, and it is imperative that all students and parents use that information to assess progress in each class. Also, continue to monitor School Loop and communicate with teachers and counselors if you have any concerns.
This is especially crucial for senior students as graduation is right around the corner, and we want to see all of our seniors at the commencement ceremony at LoanMart Field (Quakes Stadium) in Rancho Cucamonga on Wednesday, May 20th. Parents can help by continuing to review their student’s work each day and by ensuring that homework is complete. Also, please help by making sure your student is attending every class, every day. Finally, some students are taking online classes needed for graduation and/or college admissions. They must complete those by May 18th. If needed, please take advantage of our Guidance Office. We are happy to assist students and parents in their endeavors to improve, achieve, and finish the year successfully.
Finals will be held on Tuesday through Thursday, May 19 - 21 (these are minimum days).
Tuesday 5/19 Wednesday 5/20 Thursday 5/21
period1 – 8:05 to 10:05 period 2 – 8:05 to 10:05 period 3 – 8:05 to 10:05
period 5 – 10:25 to 12:25 period 6 – 10:25 to 12:25 period 7 – 10:25 to 12:25
*Students in a 0 period, see 0 period teacher for finals information.

SENIOR FINALS
Periods 2 and 6 finals taken during class periods on Wednesday and Thursday, May 13 and 14
Periods 3 and 7 taken during class periods on Friday and Monday, May 15 and 18
Period 1 – 8:05 to 10:05; Period 5 – 10:25 to 12:25 on Tuesday, May 19

All students should begin preparing for finals each night by reviewing the content that they learned.
Summer School will be in session Tuesday, May 26 to June 30. Registration will take place the last week of school. Contact your student’s counselor if you believe your student will need to attend.
We look forward to the 2015-2016 school year. We will continue to offer our Academy Program to further support student achievement by providing students with additional time within the school day for such things as freshmen transition, study time, and tutoring. All students will sign up for their Academy in the final weeks of school. Please visit www.altalomahigh.com for more information.
As always, please feel free to contact me if you have questions or concerns. I wish you all a wonderful summer.
James T. Cronin
Principal, Alta Loma High School

GRADUATION INFORMATION (UPDATE 5-18-15)

This is an important message about graduation.  PLEASE READ THIS IN ITS ENTIRETY.  I suggest parents and students read this together!!.

1. Finals
It is critical that seniors prepare for their final exams and complete any additional projects, papers, and/or make up work in a timely manner.  Students' graduation and college admissions status may be affected by final grades!  Any act of cheating is considered a serious act of academic dishonesty and may result in failure of a course.

SENIORS: RETURN ALL TEXTBOOKS TO LIBRARY TO AVOID A HOLD ON CAP AND GOWN, GRAD NITE TICKETS, ETC.
CAP AND GOWN PICK UP MAY 14, 15, 18 DURING LUNCH. If you have not picked up your cap and gown by then, visit the Activities Office.

2. Senior expectations
Seniors are expected to conduct themselves appropriately for the rest of the year.  Seniors who engage in any suspendable or illegal offense will lose their remaining senior privileges, including participation in the graduation ceremony.  These behaviors include, but are not limited to, trespassing on school grounds without authorization, fighting, use of intoxicants, vandalism.  Please respect your school and your family’s wishes to see you complete your high school career on a positive note.  Do not make poor choices or risky decisions.

3. Senior Sunset (optional) is Tuesday, May 19th.  Come usher in this new tradition at Alta Loma High School and spend some final moments with your senior class in the quad.
6:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. – Alta Loma Quad. Tacos and kettle corn will be available for purchase.

4. Graduation rehearsal (MANDATORY)
WEDNESDAY MORNING, MAY 20TH - 10 a.m. to noon at Quakes Stadium.
Students must attend and bring signed Commencement Agreement to participate in graduation and receive tickets.  Seniors will receive those in their English classes on Monday. Students arrive no later than 9:45 a.m.

Ticket info: each student receives 6 tickets +1 for signed Senior Agreement due earlier this year + 1 for a brief meeting with the principal (Seniors, I have enjoyed meeting with you this semester and hearing about your goals).  TOTAL 8 maximum.

Note: We DO NOT anticipate having additional graduation tickets at this time.

5. COMMENCEMENT CEREMONY AT QUAKES STADIUM
Gates for spectators open at 5:30 p.m.  There will be traffic so be prepared to leave early!  I highly advise advanced planning as the ceremony will begin promptly.  Processional will begin at 6:30 p.m.

Students report in cap and gown no later than 5:00 PM.  Caps and gowns may not be altered in any way.  Students must wear ONLY regalia issued by school administration (no leis, flowers, alterations to cap, etc.  Military issued regalia is permissible but please contact Mr. Logue or Mr. Cronin) .
Parents and students MUST NOT BRING NOISEMAKERS, INFLATABLES, SILLY STRING, CONFETTI AND OTHER DISTRACTIONS TO THE VENUE.  DO SO AND THE INDIVIDUAL RISKS REMOVAL FROM CEREMONY AND VENUE BY SCHOOL OFFICIALS, STADIUM SECURITY, and/OR LAW ENFORCEMENT.

We discourage students from bringing phones.  You graduate ONCE.  Soak it in.  Enjoy it.  Watch, listen and observe.  Text, tweet, and talk about it afterwards.
Know that I CAN NOT take a selfie with you at home plate. I know some of you have talked about that.  I can shake your hand and wish you well, but there is no time for selfies.  I will be happy to take a selfie with you before or after the ceremony.  :)

6.  Grad Night will be on Thursday, May 21st.
If you are going to Grad Night report to ALHS at 8:30 p.m. that night.
You will be checked on to your bus.
You must ride the bus to go to Grad Night.
You must return on the bus as well.  Bus leaves for home at 5 a.m.

7. Diplomas
STUDENTS must pick up their own diplomas.  We will begin distributing those at ALHS at 8 a.m. on Friday morning, May 22 until noon in the cafeteria.  You can also pick them up throughout the summer.

8. Weather
Graduation takes place RAIN or SHINE.  There is no alternative date or venue, and it cannot be rescheduled.  We cannot put up large tarps or tents because the field cannot accommodate them and they are cost prohibitive. If there is a safety issue, school, local, and stadium officials will make a determination about a delay.  If it is raining, however, graduation will go on.  I have been involved in over 20 graduations, and it has rained on several, but we have to continue and enjoy the moment regardless of weather conditions.

With all that said, I congratulate the Class of 2015, and I look forward to graduating you on Wednesday, May 20 at 6:30 p.m.

See you then!

Jim Cronin
Principal
