AUGUST 13, 2015

Welcome Back!

Now that the school year is underway, I would like to provide you with some important information and reminders to help you contribute to your child’s success here at Alta Loma High School.  Remember, Back to School Night is Wednesday, August 19th at 5:45 p.m.  This is a great opportunity to meet teachers and counselors and get the school year off to an effective start.  We hope to see you there!  See above for more details.

In addition, please ensure that your student is at school every day and attends each class.  We always see a direct correlation between excellent attendance, punctuality, and preparation and academic achievement.  Simply put, students who come to school each day, who are well rested, and who are prepared usually succeed.

Next, we urge you to attend our upcoming Guidance Department presentations that are designed to help you understand the opportunities and challenges of each grade level.  Please consider attending the Parent Nights for your child.  The grade levels, dates, and times are below:

Junior Parent Night – Tuesday, August 25th at 5:45 p.m.

Senior Parent Night – Tuesday, August 25th  at 7:00 p.m.

Freshman Parent Night – Tuesday, Sept. 1st  at 5:45 p.m.

Sophomore Parent Night – Tuesday, Sept. 1st  at 7:00 p.m.

These evenings in the auditorium will provide valuable information about the four-year plan, post-secondary options, grade remediation, studying tips, A-G requirements, and helpful resources.  Our guidance counselors and administration will be on hand to answer questions.

At back to school night, I will talk about the importance of relationships, resources, and rigor.  Please help us connect with you by establishing relationships with your child’s counselor and teachers.  The best first step is to open a School Loop account.  If you have not done so yet, please consider doing that by accessing the link on this page.

Know that there are many resources to help your child be successful.  These include our 4th period Academy Program and our after school Tutoring Center which will be open from 3:00 to 4:00 p.m. Monday through Thursday beginning in early September in the Library.  The Tutoring Center will be staffed by a Math and Science teachers and student tutors.   Each department also offers personalized tutoring, and students and parents can make arrangements with individual teachers.

Finally, it is important that your child maintain a challenging academic schedule that will help him or her build the academic skills, foundation, and habits, to be prepared for whatever is next in his or her life.  Whether is it is a university, junior college, military, or trade school, student must have the ability to persevere, think critically, read, write, compute, and more.  Compromising on academics now may present greater challenges for your student later.    It is the A-G curriculum that educators recommend students successfully complete to prepare them for college and career.  Each year, the graduating classes increasingly complete these requirements successfully with 59% of the Class of 2015 achieving this goal!  I am always available to discuss this with students and their families.

Our goal at Alta Loma High School is to continue to pursue academic growth while providing a positive school climate and culture.  Many of our extra-curricular activities continue to develop into robust programs that offer positive experiences for teens.  Whether it is a sport, club, or other activity, we encourage your students to get involved and come to events!

I feel privileged to be principal at Alta Loma for another historic year.  This year, we will see the completion of our new facilities.  The quad expansion and the new baseball, softball and practice fields are already completed.  The new pool will open in just a few days.  The central quad remodel will be completed by the end of September, and the stadium will open in March of 2016 where the Class of 2016 will graduate!  It will be the first graduation on the Alta Loma campus in over four decades.  Alta Loma’s future is indeed bright!

Please know that I am available to help you and feel free to contact me whenever the need arises.

We are going to have a great year!  Go, Braves!
